QWTN and Defra Digital Waste Tracking

Receipt submission is built and Defra production approval is in progress. QWTN is not on the GOV.UK list of compatible software until that completes, so receiving sites should not rely on QWTN alone for the two-working-day reporting deadline. Everything else on this page is live today.

  1. 12 Oct 2026

    Receipt submission built

    Built

QWTN builds the Defra “receipt of waste” record from each load at your receiving sites and sends it to the Digital Waste Tracking Receipt API (v1.0), with local validation, corrections and automatic retries.

  2. May 2026

Registered with Defra as a software provider

    Built

QWTN registered with Defra as a Digital Waste Tracking software provider.

  3. Submitted

    Defra production approval

    In progress

Defra requires every software provider to pass its Production Approval Tests before it can submit live records. Our test results have been submitted and we are waiting for Defra’s decision.

  4. After approval

Listed on GOV.UK as compatible software

    Pending

QWTN joins the GOV.UK list of Digital Waste Tracking software once Defra approves it. This page is updated, with the date, when that happens.

  5. Oct 2027

    Carrier and broker reporting

    Pending

Carrier reporting is expected from October 2027, once Defra publishes the API. QWTN adds it then.

Who has to report, and when

  • Receiving sites in England and Wales: since 1 October 2026.
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland: from January 2027 (Northern Ireland expected).
  • Carriers, brokers and dealers: expected from October 2027, subject to final regulations.
  • Producers: no Digital Waste Tracking reporting duty has been announced. Your Duty of Care and waste transfer notes continue.
